The genesis of “Don’t Smoke Drugs” was a Sunday night drawing club in 2005 and 2006. A handful of us were a few years out of art school and wanted to keep up our chops. One of the most common and entertaining drawing drills we performed was the “exquisite corpse”, popularized by the Dada artists nearly 80 years before us. In this exercise each contributing artist draws one of three sections, legs, torso or head while unable to see the section or sections drawn before. Upon unfolding the paper a complete character displays itself. Nearly every drawing using this method was strangely unique and amazing. I was determined to capture this fun vibe in book form. Employing the same principal of three randomized sections, I asked 32 artists to submit two drawings for a book that would have three rotating sections. Each contributor ensured that their 11” by 17” drawing lined up with everyone else’s drawings at the two specified cut points. By rotating the three independent panels, the book operator has the ability to create over 84,000 different character combinations. This activity has often been described by “Don’t Smoke Drugs!” owners as better than television.
